Sus hojas pueden ser anchas o finas.

Muchas plantas hacen su propia comida.

Hacen comida del aire, del agua y de la luz.

Las cosas de la tierra también les ayudan a hacer comida.

¡El verde de sus hojas también ayuda!

Las plantas crecen en muchos lugares alrededor del mundo.

Las plantas tienen la forma y el tamaño perfecto para los lugares en los que crecen.

Los diferentes tipos de hojas ayudan a que las plantas vivan en estos lugares.

DIFERENTES LUGARES, DIFERENTES HOJAS

Algunas plantas viven en selvas tropicales.

Muchas de estas plantas tienen hojas grandes y anchas.

Estas hojas son grandes para poder tomar mucha luz solar.

En las selvas tropicales llueve mucho.

Algunas plantas tienen las hojas con las puntas puntiagudas.

La lluvia va hacía las puntas muy rápidamente.

Así las plantas no se quedan demasiado mojadas.

Algunas plantas crecen en desiertos.

Los desiertos son lugares muy secos y sin mucha lluvia.

Las espinas ayudan a las plantas del desierto a almacenar agua.

Muchas otras plantas en el desierto tienen hojas gruesas.

Algunas plantas crecen en bosques fríos.

En los bosques fríos muchos árboles tienen hojas finas.

Estas hojas se llaman agujas.

Las agujas ayudan a que los árboles se mantengan calientes duarnte el invierno.

La nieve cae rápidamente de las agujas.

Así las ramas no pesan de más ni se rompen.

HOJAS EXTRAÑAS

Algunas plantas crecen en tierras pobres.

No pueden hacer suficiente comida.

La tierra no les da todo lo que necesitan.

Las hojas de algunas plantas son trampas.

Estas plantas usan sus trampas para atrapar animales pequeños.

Atrapan insectos para comer.

¡Pueden incluso atrapar ranas pequeñas!

Trees, grass, and bushes are all plants.

There are many different kinds of plants.

Plants can be big or small.

Their leaves can be wide or thin.

They make food from air, water, and sunlight.

Things in the soil also help them make food.

The green in their leaves helps, too!

Plants grow in most places around the world.

Plants are the right shape and size for the places where they grow.

Different kinds of leaves help plants live in these places.

DIFFERENT PLACES, DIFFERENT LEAVES

Some plants grow in hot forests.

Many of these plants have big, wide leaves.

The leaves are big to take in lots of sunlight.

Hot forests get a lot of rain.

Some plants have leaves with pointed tips.

Rain runs off the tips very fast.

Then the plants do not get too wet.

Some plants grow in hot deserts.

Deserts are very dry places without much rain.

Where are the leaves on this plant?

The sharp spines are the plant’s leaves!

Spines help desert plants save water.

Many other plants in hot deserts have thick leaves.

Thick leaves help desert plants save water, too.

Some plants grow in cold forests.

Many trees in cold forests have thin leaves.

The leaves are called needles.

Needles help these trees stay warm in winter.

The needles help in another way, too.

Snow falls off the needles fast.
