Episode 203 – Failure is not final

Failure is part of our experiences and comes with great opportunities for growth.  The challenge is to go beyond what you experienced and identify the reason behind failure.  Once you approach failure as a learning lesson you can see your growth potential as a person and as a professional.

We all want to have great success and results whether it is in our job or other activities, but failure is something everybody experiences at some point in life.  So how do you handle failure in your own life?

How do you face this challenge?  Failure comes it all sorts of shapes and forms.

Here’s what’s been covered in a nutshell:

Failure is an event.  It’s not something you look forward to, however when you have to face it you must be prepared to learn from it or at least become aware of it. It’s not easy to face your failure event.  Jake shares a personal experience where he received negative feedback after a speaking engagement.  The way he perceived the feedback affected his self-esteem and decreased his confidence.  But he didn’t stop there.  He moved on to learn what he can improve from that event and experience.  Treat your failure as an isolated moment and draw out life lessons from it that can push you forward.

Failure is the enemy.  The main idea that Jake wants to pinpoint is that no matter how hard you may try failure can hit you straight in the face and “you can’t hide from it.”  He talks about his effort to present a tailgate device and its benefits to people whom he thought would be interested in this device.  The people seemed interested but everything fell apart or at least that’s how it felt when he was asked practical questions about real numbers on the market regarding how many trucks it could benefit, and ultimately how many people.

Though one moment may seem as a failure, we may also experience the turnaround.   The following quote by Eloise Ristad is also a great reflection of Jake’s view on how we should approach failure:

“When we give ourselves permission to fail, we at the same time give ourselves permission to excel”.

Jake reminds us that “everything we do in life is a choice”, it’s part of your life and choices, you need to take action even after a failure and every failure can become an opportunity for growth.

Personal development focuses on action and admitting that we need to be devoted to progress in every aspect of life.

Remind yourself how unique you are, yell out loud into your car: “I’m freaking awesome”.
