The water temperature in the Bay is in the low to mid 60s, with the surf still close to 70. That means fish are on the move and packing the shallows.

Largemouth bass are shallow in lakes like Anna and Smith Mountain, hunting shad; try spinnerbaits and squarebills around windy shorelines.

Hot spots this week: The mouth of the York River and the grass beds at Back River are loaded with trout and drum. The CBBT’s pilings are holding nice stripers at tide changes. The Eastern Shore inlets—especially Wachapreague and Oyster—are producing strong on both trout and puppy drum. For variety and less pressure, hit the Tangier Sound flats for trout, reds, and occasional jumbo spot.

Best baits right now: Paddletail swimbaits (3-5 inch), 1/4-to-1/2 ounce bucktails, popping cork rigs with shrimp imitations, cut mullet for blues, and spinnerbaits for bass.

Lastly, remember that recent catches have included solid numbers of schoolie stripers with some keepers mixed in, quality specks averaging 18 inches, puppy drum up to 22 inches, and bluefish chewing just about anything moving.
