Laurel Chiten was an independent filmmaker who regularly won highly competitive grants, got distribution deals, and had her work shown on national television. However, when she tried to make a movie about homeopathy and couldn’t get a dollar of grant money, she discovered that she had extraordinary skills as a community builder and fundraiser - and found her life moving in a new direction. Now, at Dinner Mates, Laurel gives lonely people the opportunity to come together over dinner. Her members see each other on a regular basis to break bread, make friends, and build community. Today, Laurel joins the podcast to share the story of how she discovered her remarkable talent for marketing, how she built a membership site to solve her own problems, and why this 180-degree pivot from her previous career still utilizes her decades of filmmaking experience.
