In the olden days, in places like Hawai'i, there was a belief that illness, trouble in life and what today we might call psychological distress were caused by past or ongoing errors or transgressions against the gods or spirits by the sick person. The cure for the illness was therefore to seek forgiveness from the gods or the ancestral spirits through prayer or the people involved with these errors or transgressions through ritual. Like many of these ancient techniques, the explanations of old may not accord well with our modern scientific understanding. Nevertheless, there is merit in these ancient practices. In fact, they can serve as an effective method of hacking our brain and our body to achieve improvements in our health or happiness. We are going to employ this principle today in a meditation on forgiveness based on the Ho'oponopono prayer from Hawai'i. One thing to keep in mind is that often these forgiveness meditations need to be repeated sometimes more than once a day, for many days for the full effect to take hold. So consider that as an option for you.
