Today we will explore an alternate solution to the most common & colorful ingredient in Indian garbages-yes, you guessed it right its the single-use plastic.
In my observation, the narrative around plastic use amongst conscious consumers today have become fairly hateful and judgemental, don’t you think so? Such rigid hateful view points become equally toxic when compared to mere green washing messaging.
Therefore for this episode, I actually explored the google search on benefits of single use plastic just to recheck and understand why it started? which industries cannot do without it? and how much can govt. / industrial & consumer led action potentially contribute towards this transformation?
Plastic was invented in the mid 19th century and in the late 1970s its use skyrocketed across global markets for it fulfilled some dire needs of those times which delivered benefits beyond convenience and cost savings
Due to these factor, its adoption became so viral that 8.3 billion metric tons of plastics have been produced since 1950s, of which 50% have been produced in the past 15 years alone.
So plastic does add value to our activities, but the problem lies in its unconscious and careless disposal. To address this concern we need better alternatives that meet the benefits offered by plastic and yet not harm the environment once disposed.
Regeno a coimbatore based start-up makes compostable bags with Vegetable starch and since their launch in 2017, their product which is a promising alternative to single use plastic has been tried and tested in and around the country.
My curiosity to learn more about this product led me to Cibhi Sel Van-Founder and Managing Director of Regeno Ventures and I invite you to join me in this insightful conversation with Cibhi.
At present, India eyes a complete national ban on single use plastics by second half of 2022, while this sounds promising- we all must acknowledge that replacing single use plastics entirely is a herculean task given its cost efficiency and wide spread usage.
That’s where solutions like Regeno provide an opportunity for our economy to maintain the pace of trade and not let these bans, impact our progress. As conscious consumers, it is our responsibility to carefully choose alternate products and dodge the traps of green washing.
On that note it is a wrap on this episode. If you enjoyed this podcast and would like to listen more, please subscribe wherever you like to listen to podcasts. Do leave us a review and rating on iTunes / apple podcast app.
