The Church at Antioch

  • Acts 11:19-26
  • “The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch”
    • Not a compliment, but a term of derision.
    • Led by Barnabas, Simeon, Lucius, and Manaen (friend of Herod).
      • Jewish, North African, and Roman names. A very diverse culture.

        • Appointed for Mission!

        • Action of God. (Calling)
          • Acts 13:2
          • Are we providing space to hear the calling of the Lord in our church body?
            • Action of the church. (Affirmation and Support)
              • Acts 13:3
              • Affirming and supporting the call of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
                • Action of the called. (Sent… Went)
                  • Acts 13:4
                  • Do we nurture and affirm those appointed for the Lord?

                    • The First Missionaries

                    They did what they were sent to do!

                    • Acts 13:5
                      • They proclaimed the word of God.
                      • Romans 10:14-15
                        • euaggelizō (Greek: εὐαγγελίζω) – announce good news (“evangelize”) especially the gospel:—declare, bring (declare, show) glad (good) tidings, preach (the gospel).

                          • They were responsive to those who were interested

                          • Acts 13:7
                            • Don’t miss opportunities to share the good news with people who show interest.
                            • Acts 13:8
                              • Elymas opposed Paul and Barnabas
                                • An advisor to the Proconsul

                                  • They were gutsy when facing resistance

                                  • Acts 13:9-10
                                  • There is often resistance to the gospel.
                                    • Paul and Barnabas had the guts to continue proclaiming the truth of Jesus even when they faced resistance.
                                    • They were filled with the Holy Spirit

                                      • They were part of a powerful movement of God

                                      • Acts 13:11-12
                                        • A faith-building experience for Paul
                                        • A faith-creating experience for the Proconsul
                                        • God didn’t bring you into his kingdom to just sit in a pew.
                                          • He has called you to be on mission with Him!
                                          • He called you to take the message of the gospel wherever you go!
