Global start up awards helping curb unemployment

Youth in Africa constituted 19% of the global youth population in 2015, numbering 226 million. The United Nations defines youth as people aged 15 to 24 years. By 2030, it is predicted that the number of youths in Africa will have increased by 42%. Currently youth unemployment in South Africa is standing at 39.5% in Q1 2019 which is an increase. We haven’t seen much impact government interventions with adapting with employment for youth, but there has been a staggering number of privately led organizations looking for new, innovative ways to curb the unemployment issue. One of these has been the Global start up awards which have a tech focus and since then the Southern Africa chapter was launched last year. This year it is currently underway as they are looking for nominations and ambassadors to help start-ups gain business advice, skills, access to markets and funding opportunities.
