The Battle of Marathon (490 BC) was the culmination of King Darius I of Persia's first major attempt to conquer the remainder of the Greeks
and add them to the Persian Empire, thereby securing the weakest portion of his Western border. We mostly know of this battle from Herodotus.
Darius first sent Mardonius in 492 BC overland to Europe in order to strengthen Persian domination in Thrace and Macedon that had been weakened by the
Ionian Revolt. Although successful in those tasks, this force fell in a storm off Mount Athos and the remains were forced to return to Asia, suffering
losses along the way. In 490 BC Datis and Artaphernes were sent in a purely maritime operation to force the Cyclades islands in the central Aegean
to submit to Persia and punish Eretria and Athens for the help they had sent to the Ionian revolt. Eretria was sieged and fell, and then the fleet landed
in Marathon bay. There the army was met by a small force of Athenian and Plataean hoplites and defeated, despite the Persian numerical advantage. The run by
a dayrunner with news of the successful outcome of the battle to Athens proved the inspiration for the sport of the marathon race that was first run in the
1896 Olympic Games.

This documentary short artfully covers the bronze age origins of the Greek island of SANTORINI. Today Santorini tuants
us to identify it with Plato's legendary lost island of ATLANTIS. The island's original name of KALLISTI, meaning "most beautiful", was given to it by the Minoans of Crete. Befitting
the name Kallisti, this documentary conveys the awesome beauty that was, and is, Santorini.

The present day excavation of the bronze age city of Akrotiri is producing extraordinary paintings, or frescoes, preserved within multi-storied buildings two-thousand years
older than those of Pompeii. Similar to Pompeii, Akrotiri was preserved for immortality by the largest volcanic eruption in the last 10,000 years; a blast so large that it
sank most of the island into the sea. It's global impact was chronicled by the Egyptians, the Chinese and even the writers of the Bible. But, it was Plato who wrote of the
island over 1200 years after the fact giving birth to the greatest of all legends. Today Santorini is a popular tourist destination in the Aegean Sea and it remains one of 
the largest and most beautiful active volcanoes on earth awaiting to awaken us all.

CYPRUS: SOUTH SIDE - On July 20, 1974 the country of Turkey began the illegal invasion of the independent Greek island of Cyprus. This led to the displacement of thousands of Cypriots and the establishment of a
separate Turkish Cypriot regime to govern the invaded area in the north still 
recognized globally only by Turkey itself.  The United Nations has condemned this illegal occupation of the northern 40% of the island, yet it still exists today.
