Members Reviews:
A little gem, a vital aqualung for a soul in stasis.
This book brought me the same wonder that I get when I walk along a beach and I find a piece of mother of pearl, or pebble in the shape of Africa -a private, intense joy as if the universe has conspired to drop a bit of magic into my lap. I felt like I was reading someones diary, a very deep personal place inside someones soul that opened briefly -and you got to see it quickly before the secret door closed again forever. There are turn of phrases that struck me as totally unique and unused, a world I would like to visit. I want to be friends with these people -I want to hang out with these characters at the 'Starlight'. I want to lie on those loungers looking up at the stars. You know that feeling when you were a kid and you really wanted the Willie Wonka Golden wrapper to be real -and then to find one. This is the place I want to be real as an adult. I liked being led there and finding a totally unknown part of yourself you didn't know you had -with Green Margie as your tour guide.
A Beautiful Reminder
This story of recovery and reclamation of self under the Karoo stars is funny, honest and charming. Through Margie's slow return from pain and Cape Town to the basic natural joy of seedlings and sunrise, we get to accompany her in an evaluation of what is really necessary for happiness. Each character is drawn with critical nuance and we are able to grow in love or distaste for them as the tale unfolds. The author shades in a careful picture of the politics of a small Karoo town, the racism and resistance to change sitting in spiky contrast to the natural beauty. If ever a book has powered up my desire to throw my life and dogs in the car and head for that wide dry land, it is this book
I hated saying goodbye to Margie
Margie is the kind of person you meet at page one and hate to say goodbye to at the end of the book. It's easy to see why she struggles with life's endless challenges - she's clever, demanding and impulsive, she takes no prisoners, suffers no fools - but mostly, she is decent and very very funny. I loved Margie and felt spellbound by her story. I loved this book.
Warmth, laughter and insight
An absolutely enjoyable read, full of warmth, laughter, and insight. A story of restoration, friendship, and the joys of the human spirit, with characters that are wonderful to get to know.
