Publisher's Summary:
In this exuberant novel, a thirtysomething-year-old woman embarks on a wilderness survival course and discovers that sometimes you have to leave things behind in order to find yourself.
A year after getting divorced, Helen Carpenter, thirty-two, lets her annoying younger brother talk her into signing up for a wilderness survival course. It's supposed to be a chance for her to pull herself together again, but when she discovers that her brother's even more annoying best friend is also coming on the trip, she can't imagine how it will be anything other than a disaster. Thus begins the strangest adventure of Helen's well-behaved life: three weeks in the remotest wilderness of a mountain range in Wyoming, where she will survive mosquito infestations, a surprise summer blizzard, and a group of sorority girls.
Yet despite everything, the vast wilderness has a way of making Helen's own little life seem bigger, too. And somehow the people who annoy her the most start teaching her the very things she needs to learn. Like how to stand up for herself. And how being scared can make you brave. And how sometimes you just have to get really, really lost before you can even have a hope of being found.
Members Reviews:
Hard to get through.
The narrating and voices were like nails on a chalkboard to me- very difficult to enjoy. The book was also so fluffy and unrealistic that I couldn't bare to listen without rolling my eyes. After listening to Girl On a Train, All The Light We Cannot See, and Me Before You, this book was like eating sugar free cake when you were hoping for the real thing. Blah.
Funny and charming
Would you listen to Happiness for Beginners again? Why?
Yes. It is a light hearted, good read. Inspirational too.
Have you listened to any of Marguerite Gavins other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't, but plan to after this one. She was awesome! A different voice for each character and I was never wondering who said something. I think she may be the best audio book performances I've ever heard.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes.
Any additional comments?
It was a funny book about finding yourself by connecting with others. A fun adventure. I'm not sure if a guy would get into it. It's more of a "chick flick" type book.
Sequel Please
Where does Happiness for Beginners rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is one of my all time favorite audio books. I have listened to it several times.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Happiness for Beginners?
When her brother brings her the cooler with the surprise. I actually cried.........and I never cry.
Which scene was your favorite?
The elevator scene.
If you could take any character from Happiness for Beginners out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Duncan. There is clearly more to him than meets the eye.
Any additional comments?
I wish there was a sequel. I want to see how things turn out. I hated when the book was over.
Enjoyable, would listen to a sequel
Would you listen to Happiness for Beginners again? Why?
I would listen to this again. It was enjoyable, but was really just brain candy. Nothing to deep. No long-term lessons gained.
