Publisher's Summary:
Yglesiass debut novel of youth, privilege, and rebellion.
Rafael Yglesias completed this novel, his first, at the age of sixteen. The largely autobiographical story follows a New York prep school dropout yearning for freedom and authenticity.
On its release the book was hailed as a next-generation Catcher in the Rye. But protagonist Raul Sabas comes of age in a very different New York than Holden Caulfield - a tumultuous and radicalized city following the student takeover of Columbia University and assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Hide Fox, and All After is a story of adolescence written by an adolescent - deeply felt and commanding the remarkably perceptive eye that distinguishes Yglesias as a great novelist.

An Inspirational read
At the time I read this I was 16, running my own theatre group, making my first film and failing at school with a Greek chorus of adults perpetually telling me why someone of such little experience could not do what I was doing. This book utterly captivated and seemed to understand exactly how a teenager, frustrated and impatient to express themselves, felt about almost everything. Witty, incisive, madly brilliant and brilliantly mad, Iglesias had started already at 16 to tap into exactly what it is like to feel like a freak of nature, destined for an artistic life if only the uninspiring environment would play ball. Faced with the usual classroom bully cliches, Raoul just flips his cloak and poses dramatically on the stage in the performance of his own life that is always playing in his head. A wonderful book that excited with its precocity and still does. We all look back at out first efforts and say like the Irish farmer asked for directions, 'well, I wouldn't start from here', but Iglesias has every reason to be proud of who he was when he wrote it and of how he described his experience. Juvenelia of the highest form.
Interesting for Fans of This Author
I chose to read this first book from this author after becoming entranced with some of his more recent works; Dr. Neruda's Cure for Evil, and Fearless. Although the book drags at points, it is a true look into the psyche of a brilliant but lost adolescent who seeks to find his place in the world.
An autobiographical aspect is almost always present with this writer, and this first work is no exception. Ygelesias was only 15 when he penned this novel, and the bulk of the characters are teenagers. The protagonist's name RAUL suggests a kinship with his own Rafael, and the irony was not lost on me that RAUL's father is RAFAEL.
I look forward to seeing more work from Yglesias, since the time between novels has become too long.
