Homeschool Heroes with Krisa Winn

As you know, there’s not ONE right way to homeschool, and there’s not ONE kind of homeschooler! One of the loveliest things about homeschooling is that our unique teens who learn in unique ways and find their own unique success.

That’s why we are so excited to talk to Krisa Wynn from Sped Homeschool and Homeschool Heroes. SPED and Homeschool Heroes have been serving homeschooling families with children who learn differently for years. We interviewed Peggy Ployhar, founder of SPED in these episodes:

  • Transition Planning for Teens with Special Needs
  • Help for Special Needs in Homeschool High School
  • Address and Cope with Brain-Based Diagnosis
  • Krisa Winn’s homeschool story

Krisa works with Peggy Ployhar at Homeschool Heroes/SPED Homeschool. Her homeschool story starts long ago.

Even as a child, Krisa knew she wanted to be a teacher when she grew up. She earned her college degree and became a classroom teacher for over twenty years, teaching in both public and private Christian schools.

The other thing Krisa always knew she wanted was to be a mom. She got married at age nineteen to the sweetheart she met in Bible school. However, they were unable to have children until they had been married for 21 years.

Krisa continued to teach until her second child was born. It was then that her husband said, “Krisa, you’ve been teaching everybody else’s kids for 20 years. It’s time for you to teach our own.”

    Working with HSLDA

It was then that the opportunity came for Krisa to work part-time for HSLDA. She loved helping the homeschool families with diverse learners while she homeschooled her own children. Then she met Peggy Ployhar of SPED Homeschool. There she has helped Peggy set up Homeschool Heroes and other programs as SPED Homeschool.

    SPED Homeschool and Homeschool Heroes

At SPED Homeschool (along with Homeschool Heroes), homeschooling families with learning differences can:

    • Get connected
      • Find families who are facing similar challenges such as ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia or other learning differences
      • At SPED Homeschool, you can join online groups with other parents with similar experiences
      • Find resources
        • Discover resources that are created for or adaptable for homeschoolers with different needs
        • This includes their MindPrint assessment
        • Be encouraged
          • Find opportunities for coaching and consulting, resources for tutoring, blog posts, resources, and other homeschooling families
          • Krisa reminds us:

One reason we are homeschooling is to give our children everything they need to fulfill who God made them to be.

            MindPrint

Sometimes parents need some help discerning what their homeschoolers need. That’s where MindPrint Assessment comes in.

Mindprint is an online tool that is in the form of a series of games. It is not a standardized test; rather, the assessment measures the child’s reasoning skills, verbal reasoning, visual reasoning, executive function, and memory skills. The assessment highlights the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Then it offers links to support for the student’s unique needs.

            Homeschool Curriculum Discovery Day

Periodically, SPED offers Homeschool Curriculum Discovery Day (this year it is May 8th). On that day, from 9:00 until 2:00 CT, every 15 minutes they will present a different publisher that offers curriculum options for learners with differences. The publisher teaches a lesson based on something in the curriculum.

            A word of encouragement

Krisa, Peggy, and the team at SPED Homeschool do not want you to feel like you are alone or that there’s any reason to despair. You can do this, they wanna connect you with people who can help you do it.

Check out the work of SPED Homeschool/Homeschool Heroes and join us for this encouraging conversation.
