Referred to as "The Last Great Race On Earth," the Iditarod hearkens back to a time before the automobile, airplane and railroad; when travel over the frozen, far reaches of Alaska had to be undertaken with precision. On well-traveled trails cut through mountainsides, woods and open expanses, mushers and their trusty teams of sled dogs would glide in order to transport necessities.
