Publisher's Summary:
The title says it all! It's Not Necessarily So: A Senior Priest Separates Faith from Fiction and Makes Sense of Belief. A wise parish priest and educator not only tackles the problems in the institution of the Catholic Church and the dogma of the Catholic faith but also offers solutions and spiritual insights.
Fr. Richard Rento, STL, confronts the issue of clergy sexual abuse head on and focuses on many other areas of church dysfunction. Anyone who has ever questioned illogical rules, meaningless ritual, or implausible doctrine will find answers in this book. Written in a warm and friendly style, the book addresses life-impacting and community-building issues ranging from answered prayers to gay marriage, from abortion to the meaning of God.
From the get-go Fr. Rento announces that he is not a theologian, so don't expect any theological treatises or dissertations. Rather, be treated to his personal experience and unpretentious language. Persons who have doubts, fears, or misgivings about their faith and/or their relationship with the church will find comfort in this book. "Nones" and parents of "nones" will appreciate Fr. Rento's perceptions, as will everyone who is searching for meaning in life and a belief system based upon a relationship with the Divine that respects and resonates with the whole person and allows for spiritual growth and maturity.

Whups! Our Church Is Showing!
By chapter five of Fr, Rento's book, I recognized a kindred spirit, someone who, in the old days of the Church, I would have loved having as a confessor. Father Rento and I seem to have shared many of the same revelations including the occasional nudging from the same Spirit. Speaking out provocatively as a priest in today's Catholic world takes great courage. For a lay woman to do the same takes extraordinary guts and can only happen when each has been somehow touched by the love of a radical, activist Jew named Jesus. Father Rento has such a kindly, common sensical approach in explaining the current hot button issues in the Church and the nature of God that it is balm to the wounded soul and, trust me, there are many battered souls still (thanks to courageous people like Fr. Rento) somehow willing to remain in their pews and to be catalysts for change in the parishes of our nation. May all who read this book take strength from it and do likewise.
Father Richard Rento Writes from His Heart to Ours....
I have been anxiously awaiting Fr. Rento's book-- "It's Not Necessarily So: A Senior Priest...." I ordered it last week and it arrived yesterday.
I spent most of the day reading this amazingly honest and pastoral book with a highlighter in my free hand. On almost every page there is more yellow highlighting than simply black and white paragraphs. I am sure that I am not alone when I say that I am grateful for Fr. Rento's insightfully wonderful masterpiece of Catholicism. It's like having our own Bishop John Shelby Spong-- but even better!
He really does make sense!!
There is real wisdom shared here about many areas of faith life that I find troubling to a variety of people. I think this Senior Priest gives hope in continuing to see God in daily life as a God of great mercy, compassion and forgiveness.
