In John 18, Jesus is betrayed by Judas, taken into custody, and brought before the religious leaders. Peter, as Jesus has foretold, denies him three separate times. Jesus is then brought to Pilate, the Roman ruler of the region, and the Jews ask that they can put Jesus to death. Pilate finds no basis for this, but gives in to the crowd as they demand the that Jesus be killed.
