On the night of October 19th, 1970, firefighters in Santa Cruz, California were on their way to investigate reports of a fire at one of the massive, hilltop properties that overlooked the Pacific Ocean.   Once they got there, they noted that the house appeared empty. Since it was on fire, an empty house was a temporary relief, because at least no one was trapped inside. That momentary relief evaporated when one of firefighters shone their flashlight into the backyard and into the swimming pool and found a body floating on the surface.
