On Butterflies of Wisdom today, Best-Selling Author, Win C welcomes Jon Dekar. Jon, co-founder of DESīN, is the inventor, designer and lead developer of Obi™, a revolutionary assistive dining device, and the company’s first product. Jon is the visionary and driving force behind the creation of Obi and the establishment of the consumer robotics company DESīN. Jon initially developed the idea for Obi while working in nursing homes as a teenager and watching his maternal grandfather, Carl struggle with eating due to a degenerative disease. It was then Jon became determined to create an elegant, robotic solution for those who require assistance when eating. Jon created his first prototype device in 2006, while a college first-year student, to provide dining assistance to a local six-year-old girl named Hope. Following a ten year journey to fund the company, finish development, comply with regulation, establish manufacturing and distribution, Obi™ was finally introduced in July 2016. It is the first product of DESīN, the Michigan-based company Jon founded with his father, Tom Dekar, in 2010. Jon holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dayton. He is also an alumnus of Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Jon and his wife, Maria, have one son, Theodore.
