"It was a quiet enough journey."
So said top hurling referee, Paud O'Dwyer, when he reflected on the long trip home to Carlow from Cork after he didn't send off Aaron Gillane in the 2021 Munster final. Not dismissing the player could very well have cost him and his team of umpires the All-Ireland senior hurling final later in the year. Everyone in the car knew it that day too. It is the only major hurling inter-county game that Paud has not refereed.
Here he discusses his philosophies and lists some of the highs and lows of being a top GAA referee.
