It’s Monday. And the last day of September. No better time to have Greg Dworkin drop by to sum up happenings. If it was a relatively quiet weekend for you, perhaps that was because you weren’t getting any phone calls from Western North Carolina, and other storm and flood-stricken areas of the country, where there was no power, no cell service, and no clean water. And consequently, still no clear picture of exactly how bad it is.
On the upside, there was the opportunity to remind people that: 1) yes, there are large numbers of climate change-believing, tolerant and inclusive Democrats in the area, and; that real Americans help.
The political world went kind of topsy-turvy over the weekend, too, with this Harris ad featuring ex-Trump voters renouncing the orange guy. Which of course, leads to death threats. On the other hand, some people know full well how wrong and bad Trump is, but can’t quite bring themselves to the right conclusion. Even though Trump spent the weekend promising that The Purge would become a part of his platform. Other (sadly) influential voices were being similarly dumb, if not similarly scary.
On the domestic policy front, Harris policy proposals are winners over Trump’s. But sometimes, scary lies win out over hopeful truth.
Is it funny that TikTok users are reportedly using AI to translate Hitler speeches? Well, it can be.
What won’t be funny is how many more nails this badly unbalanced Supreme Court could put in our coffin, starting next week. Held up next to this weekend’s reminder of the real world stakes, just for transgender Americans alone, it’s appropriately worrisome.
Trump’s got a new rip-off up and running, this one more naked than most.
By the way, just as a reminder: Joe Biden actually knew what he was doing, had international allies, and could make amazing things happen, internationally and with dozens of moving parts.
