Aston Villa have spent big during the January transfer window with the £23 million purchase of left-back Lucas Digne and the loan signing of Coutinho. The club has also signed the less well-known Kerr Smith from Dundee United for a fee which could reportedly rise to £2 million.

Smith made his first-team debut for the Scottish club aged 16 against Rangers, then managed by Steven Gerrard. The defender has since played ten league games for the club and impressed enough to be linked with Manchester United, Chelsea and Everton.
