A finales del siglo IX, Basilio II, emperador bizantino, dio forma a uno de los cuerpos de élite más célebres y exóticos del mundo medieval. Con la llegada de 6000 varegos desde las tierras del Rus de Kiev, al norte del Mar Negro, Constantinopla fue testigo del nacimiento de la célebre Guardia Varega.
