On this episode of BLK Talk, I had the honor of sitting down with Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, record producer, and audio engineer James Artissen, a multifaceted creative whose journey is as inspiring as it is impactful.
Born in Queens, New York, Artissen — formerly known as James Worthy — has always believed the name carries power, purpose, and identity. From being shaped by East Coast legends and soul-driven influences to having a life-changing moment meeting Michael Jackson at just 16, his path was destined for greatness. After relocating to Atlanta, his early beginnings in a Dallas Austin–supported music program and later graduating from The Art Institute of Atlanta laid the foundation for a career built on intention and mastery.
James walked us through his evolution — from building his name behind the scenes working with icons like Meek Mill, Justin Bieber, Whodini, Raphael Saadiq, Goodie Mob, and J. Holiday, to transitioning into artistry with chart-topping work, acclaimed EPs like Blu Leisure and Kaleidoscopes, and a breakout in 2023 alongside Big Gipp with Gipp N Worthy.
Today, James continues to push culture forward as the founder of Humble Sound Records, in partnership with Sony Orchard — home to powerhouse voices including B Angie B, Robin S., Tynisha Keli, Sophia Habib, Shaynah, and Truth Hurts.
In our conversation, James shared insight on legacy, ownership, creativity, discipline, and the courage it takes to evolve in public while honoring your roots. His story reminds us that somewhere between vision, resilience, and faith — greatness is built.
Thank you, James, for tapping in and giving our audience an authentic look into the journey, the grind, and the purpose behind the music.
