Carl Lentz is back in the news, so it seemed like a good time to read this piece about his 2020 departure. Two things to notice: how little I had to say about his marriage - because that was NEVER the main issue for anyone who wasn’t a Lentz and I added a little update at the end.

In May of 2023, “The Secrets of Hillsong” was released on FX/Hulu. Originally pitched to the participants as a narrative focused on spiritual abuse survivors, it turned out to be a redemption fiction about Carl and Laura Lentz. So I wrote this letter to the director (Stacey Lee) to express how I felt about that plot twist.

In the midst of the chaos of a cross-country move, Janice takes time to thoughtfully critique a white male deconstruction “influencer,” BR, highlighting his lack of genuine reckoning with his privileged background and superficial allyship. A strong argument in favor of white men stepping back in the deconstruction space, advocating for marginalized voices to be prioritized and for men like BR to engage in real-world work to develop genuine understanding and empathy.
