Always dreaming of Paris

Paris is a city I love and I love to escape there through books of other peoples journeys. What a journey Katrina Lawrences book was- from childhood to motherhood with Paris as a gorgeous backdrop.

This book not only explores Pairs but the history and some of the key players as well. I have a list of people I now want to read up on.

Sometimes certain phrases I found were a bit waffley, or a bit over done but on the whole I loved this book and I want to add the hard copy to my collection.

This book was a great escape to a city I adore.

Unbelievably hilarious read!

Brandon is an insanely funny storyteller! The events that have shaped Brandon's career themselves are jaw dropping, but when Brandon's raw, unfiltered, sometimes deer-in-the-headlights voice is added, it really makes for a book you can't put down. I laughed so hard I cried multiple times. In some instances, I couldn't believe what I was reading. Brandon's raunchy, racy, controversial stories will have you both shocked and laughing out loud. What an incredible journey he has had. Hopefully he has learned some lessons along the way and is paying his good fortune forward. Can't wait for book 2 to find out what happens with Hayden.

What A Great Read, Way Better Than A Netflix Binge Session.

I got this book on Friday, started reading it that night and ended up reading 1/2 the book over the next two days. I'd put it down and need to pick it up again and keep reading. I'm not an avid reader but found Sex Hair and Billionaires to be so interesting that I couldn't get enough. Brandon's stories have all the ingredients that fascinate me: Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll.. The best part is they are all true which makes it even more interesting.. I really appreciate his honesty, candor and humility. I would recommend this book to anyone, guy or girl. I ended up binge reading over the weekend and felt so much better about myself for not even turning on my TV...

An absolute treasure

I started this book as we were shortly to take an inland tour through Australia's heartland. I was totally gobsmacked by the knowledge across multiple aspects of the writer. He seemed to have an infinite understanding of not only detailed history, but botany, zoology, psychology, social anthropology, politics let alone huge amounts of geography of Australia. The detail is phenomenal, and as it is in memoir-mode his own recollections enliven the narrative. One thing I missed though, was a selection of maps and diagrams. A reader can feel s/he might have virtually no idea of the locality under inspection. I tried Google maps and didn't fare much better. Photos were good but could have been more fully captioned. Our Ghan trip from Adelaide to Darwin though not the immediate focus of the book, was rendered much more insightfully enjoyable because we had read this book. I had The Bush with me through our holiday and kept on dipping into it. Incidentally - it is a dip-into book - open any page and pick up interesting paragraphs straight away. Thoroughly recommendable by all who have got past the Brizzie to Melbers perception that that's all Australia is!

Australian adaptation

Enjoyed the synthesis of bush folklore, botanical science and Australian history. Watson encourages us to feel guilt for the actions of our colonial families but to respect their fortitude and adaptation to a hostile world. It is humbling to appreciate just how much the the immigrants had to learn and how quickly the diverse collection of discards created a shared knowledge based largely on oral history. Partly also by reading the changes in the flora and fauna. Remarkable also how some, perhaps many, indigenous individuals adapted. There can be some pride to temper the guilt.

Read this, Australians, and know yourself and your country a lot better.

I can't remember the last time I read non-fiction that I found so difficult to put down, aided by Watson's considerable literary gifts and sardonic wit. More importantly (and I know how pompous this is going to sound but I don't care) you will not understand yourself as an Australian until you have read this book and for those in other countries, you will not understand Australians until you have read this book.

Heart renching at times, but also uplifting.

As you listen to this book, your heart will break at times for Pete, and his family, but you will also feel hope like the family does in regards to finding a cure for A L S. As I listened to this, I felt bad that the problems that I have are minor compared to Pete's, but yet I sometimes feel sorry for myself. If I could take any lesson from this book,it would be to have a positive attitude about life no matter what obstacles I might face. I was proud to hear Pete say that he was going to do anything possible to fight, and find a cure even though he knows how serious his situation is. With the ice bucket challenge a great success, Pete has the entire world pulling for him, and raising much needed funds for a cure.

'where the axe may fall'

O'Farrells like-no-other memoir leaves you in awe of both her frightening experiences and her brilliant writing. O'Farrell suffers from various neurological problems following a childhood illness, but as a teenager she jumps into deep water as a dare and nearly drowns because, as she well knew, she could not tell up from down. In South America a machete is held to her throat and all her travel money stolen because she and her boyfriend are in a district where travellers are warned there are armed robbers. Why does she take a 9-week old baby already raging from severe reflux (which she refused to tell the health visitor about) to rural Italy where she's left alone in a car to be rocked by thieves in their attempt to get in? She takes her 7 year-old son who can't swim on her back off the coast of Zanzibar to a post a tourist had told her was easy to reach. She finds herself in deep water and her weak arms unable to hold him. Many of these brushes with death - and there are more - seem the result of a pathological recklessness, a crazed addiction to risk, and because of this, although the experiences are terrifying, her culpability reduces your sympathy.

That is, until the later chapters when she explains the 'hinge' on which her whole life swings: as an 8-year-old she is the little girl dying from encephalitis. But she survives: she learns to walk again and do all the things which the doctors told her parents she never would. She was ALIVE and she would LIVE - the rest of her life was a massive defiant kick in the teeth for Proud Death of John Donne's poem. All the risk-taking falls into place and O'Farrell becomes truly admirable. I Am I Am I Am is understandable.

The later chapters also relate without self-pity her fearful births history - a near fatal haemorrhage following a mismanaged Caesarian and subsequent miscarriages. Also without self-pity is her detailing of daily life with her 8-year daughter who suffers from a rare immune deficiency which means that from birth she scratched her glue-dry skin to shreds and if she even goes anywhere near nuts or anywhere near where someone may have eaten nuts, she can and does fall into possibly fatal anaphylactic shock. O'Farrell's life involves heart-breaking precautions needed to keep her daughter safe for one more day. 'She IS She IS'.
