First I want to say what an excellent performance Stephen Mendel gives with these books. I will certainly look for more books with him as the narrator.

This is the third in the McCabe/Savage series and I think each one gets better and the characters are fleshed out a little more then in the previous.

This book was really good with a complex plot that kept me on the edge wondering just who would escape with their lives.

Pregnant girl goes into local doctor's office, refuses to give her real name, suspicious doctor wants to help girl, doctor snoops in backpack, girl catches doctor, girl leaves doctor's office in a hurry, girl gets murdered and doctor is almost killed but instead ends up comatose in hospital, one of the main protagonist's (Maggie Savage) brother is framed. This is how this book opens - Wow, I need a breather. The killer is known only by an alias, yet known by his true identity in the community by many. It's up to McCabe and Savage to solve the case and the crimes committed by this individual.

Really good series, I recommend all three so far!

Held my attention

Tired ending! But... but... enough imagination tickling that it held me to last. This is the sort of average who daunt that I wish was the average. Meaning? Well I listen to these to be entertained... or seriously distracted... while ploughing through the minutia of life. You know, the mindless chores. So I look for books that will make me want to mow lawns, do dishes, drive through gridlock... like that. Do stuff that breaks away pieces of time to listen to an escapist mystery story.

James Hayman is the almost perfect writer of these things. He's a commercial writer who creates forgettable yet compelling little stories an d Darkness first is exactly one of those.McCabe and Savage are more like instruments than characters... Instruments that Hayman plays with the excellent collaboration of Stephen Mendel's reading.

I'm guessing that like me, you'll guess the bad guy's identity early on but so what? The dishes will still get clean with the least effort.

He gets better and better...

I usually love debut novels. It is the novel the author has been dreaming of writing a great portion of their lives. Some authors get better as they go (i.e. John Hart) and I feel it is the same with James Hankins. After being on a mystery/police procedural binge, this series is among my favorites. Can't wait to move on to the next book, and that is a good judgement of how much a series/author is acclaimed.

A Great First Installment!

I enjoy this series because it's a very lighthearted & enjoyable cozy listen. Kelly seems to not being able to resist the urge to snoop when her goddaughter is found dead, and it lands her in some prickly situations. Her boyfriend Mike, the sheriff, follows police procedure and sticks to the resources he has, but at the end of the day it's no match for the wealth of information that Kelly can drum up from patrons of her coffee house. It was a great listen, and I look forward to book 2 in this series!

This is a great book; this is the first book in the Cedar Bay Mystery series written by Dianne Harman and narrated by Erin deWard. Kelly runs the Kellys Koffee Shop in Cedar bay. The local residents come to eat and gossip. When the high school homecoming queen is killed. Kelly, along with her dog, and boyfriend Mike, the local sheriff determine to solve the case.

The narrator Erin deWard did a great job with this book. She did a great job with the different voices of each character in this book. It was very easy to listen to in one sitting and I didnt want to stop listening until the end.

If you are looking for a great book with well-developed characters then you need to listen to this book. I am looking forward to listening to the next book by this author and narrator.

Author makes poor narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

If it were mine, I would have paid a professional narrator.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Deborah Knott. I like all of these books. I am, myself, an attorney and a part time judge, so I enjoy that aspect of the book, particularly.

What didnt you like about Margaret Marons performance?

She's monotonous, and doesn't differentiate the voices of the characters. I also note a sing-song rhythm in the performance.

Was Long Upon the Land worth the listening time?

Yes, but I do think it cost too much for what I got.

What happened to CJ Critt!

I hate it when authors suddenly decide to narrate their own books. They are authors not narrators. I am sure there are a few authors that also make great narrators but very few people are great in two fields.

I read Margaret Maron books because she is a good writer and writes books FUN to read. But I listened to the books rather than read them because of C.J. Critt. She made the character come alive and was believable. And - now that is the voice in my head - no matter how good Margaret Maron might be as a narrator the only one for her main character is Critt!

Ms. Maron - please write more books! And, please bring back C.J. Critt!

Love Deborah Knott Series

I have read them, and started listening to every Deborah Knott series book. I love then and wish Margaret Maron would write them faster. Have to wait to long in between for the next one. I have one complaint, the last book and this was narrated by Margaret herself and she just sounds too old for the Deborah character. I really liked C.J. Critt who did a couple of them and Kate Forbes. Margaret would be great for the older characters but just doesn't fit for Deborah, please bring back C.J. Critt Mrs.

Outstanding. Sad it may be the last in the series.

Peter Bowen tells a story with a unique style and voice. It doesn't get any better, I wish there were 100 books in this series.

At Last Another Gabriel Dupre Story!

Peter Bowen surfaces once more to continue this beloved series about a back country, mixed breed (Metis Indian) detective. I love this Montana author's story telling style....filled with big heart, dry wit, keen observation and dogged persistence. Gabriel Dupre speaks in broken English of little known native history; all while drinking, fast driving, smoking & fiddling on the edge of the law. The narrator skillfully captures the all the local characters through many unique voices that color the scene.

Most excellent story and narration.

We have listened to four previous stories in the terrific series. We are so glad that all the rest are now available. We will listen to all. The narrator is fabulous.

great narration, weak plot

lindsay writes and narrates perfectly, so although the plot is very weak (disappointed) it is a pleasure to listen to him.

Does Dexter Die?

I truly wish Jeff Lindsay hadn't killed Dexter off. I'm sure J. L. had to do as Dexter told him. Although secretly, and as much as I love/hate Debra, her bull doggedness would have saved her step brother.... I love Devilishly Delicious Dexter!

average compared to the rest

I have enjoyed all the Dexter series, but this one for me was a little weak on the story line. narrator again is brilliant.

Different Dexter

Mostly listen over quite a while on my Amazon Dot.. However, the more I heard the more I wanted to. Good story although Dex's dark passenger didn't appear much and it wasn't up to his normal gory best.

Better than the one before

This one has more action in it, feels more like a Dexter story than the last one. Worth listening to.

An in-the-buff zing to the small town murder story

While far too sexy to be called a cozy mystery, Drama Queen adds an in-the-buff zing to the normally staid, small community murder story.

I love that the author is also an experienced actor and drama instructor. His grasp of improvs Yes AND? concept shines in this story. Every time the characters recognize a clue, you can feel the unspoken Yes AND? right before the plot takes a new twist.

Nicky and Noah are two sexy leading characters who conduct the investigation this comedic caper with wit and style. The supporting cast can only have been built on the follies and foibles of real drama students and instructors.

The narrator delivered on the fast paced humor, the character nuances, and sheer entertainment. Its a rare jewel when you can hear the narrator actually smile while delivering the lines, and I heard it several times.

I love this story, just the right mix, of fun, hilarity and mystery in the mix. The storyline is fresh and well thought out, and the dynamic of the characters is through the roof! Top notch narration as well! This is a win win win indeed!

I have to admit that I really loved this book. Mystery books with a healthy dose of humor is one of my absolute favorites. Murder, sex and theater oh my. The setting for this book is in the academic world of acting. The characters, while at times a bit one dimensional, were interesting. While this a LGBT mystery book, it still has all you need for a most enjoyable ride.

A fun dramatic comedy.

Nicky Abbondanza is at the center of this murder mystery. Set on the Treemeadow college campus that focuses on the theater arts, there are plenty of characters that are literally trained in the arts of deceit, deflection, deception, and out right artful lies. Its going to be tough to figure out who is racking up the bodies. And then there is Noah Oliver, an assistant professor who is up for tenure. every time Nicky sees Noah, his heart does a little flip.

As you can tell by the name of the series (A Nicky & Noah Mystery) these two eventually team up. First, we have to go through all the cutsy stuff of them figuring out that they like each other. That was pretty sweet. Once their romance is off and running, it moves really quickly. In fact, that is probably one of the things that I found a bit silly about the plot.

Nothing is Sacred Anymore

The story made you part of where ever it took you. Scenic, visual and beautiful at the same time. Wish I knew if the statements in the story were actual or if just fiction. Very interesting subject: forgeries. Keeps you wanting to know more......

Miss old narrator.

I really liked Cynthia Darrow's narration of this series. This narrator is good, but not as good as Ms. Darrow.

excellent, well-written mystery read

After the last book (Booty Bones) I had decided not to continue with this series - and that was sad to me because I had been a loyal fan from the start. But this book was on special so I purchased it - and am I glad I did! I was so happy to be back in Zinnia for Sarah Booth's latest adventure.

I have never visited the Delta, but the author's vividly descriptive style bring it to life in my mind's eye. The author has a clear love for animals and I like how they are woven into the story in support roles for Sarah Booth and Tinkie - mystery solving companions as the author describes them. There is a rich sense of history in this book that I found particularly interesting. It was amazing to me how you can take such disparate subjects - blues music, racism, survivalists, cults and religious fervor - and create such a well-written story without taking away from the cozy aspect of friends and animals as well as a mystery to solve. And I do adore the cover art! Any author who doesn't think you judge a book by its cover isn't selling very many books - if it doesn't appeal, you will never pick it up to read! Excellent series that I now feel I can recommend again to any mystery lover.

Great Read

Once again I am charmed by the outpouring of southern sensibility in this delightfully entertaining whodunit. Sarah Boothâs blues is brought to the forefront when her assistance is required when her friend and his bandmates are being threatened and when one is murdered, it will take Sarah Booth, Tinkie, Coleman, Harold and the gang all the strength needed to put out this burning fire. I enjoyed this well-written drama that put me alongside Sarah Booth as she tackled the case in front of her and her personal life. I like how the author created a story that seemed as real to me as it appeared on the page. The author did a great job in presenting this mystery where there were plenty of suspects and I loved watching how it all untangled with a couple of twists that made this story a pure delight. This is one of my favorite and I look forward to the next adventures with Sarah Booth and her friends.

Sarah Booth Needs to Move On

I've read all the Sarah Booth books up to this one, but I think this one was a bit wordy. Too much history with Jitty and the blues singers.

Starting to Wear Thin

I have really been enjoying these "mild" ghost books with the engaging stories and characters, but the amount of child abuse and child murder is starting to wear thin and be disturbing. This book and a couple previous are the biggest culprits. Think I'm going to take a break from the rest of the series.

Nice light reading

I like this series because it doesn't have a lot of foul language. The stories are very light, The entire series is a bit too romance driven for me but for a quick lite read while doing housework or driving a long distance it is fine.

Great and I do mean great read!

I enjoyed this book so much that I walked around with earphones so that I could listen at every opportunity. I also had it on my Kindle and Kindle HD so that I would never miss an opportunity to enjoy this book. I also could not guess the killer and suspected the wrong person but with good reason. Great book and great narration!

Too short. Just when I got really interested, it ended. Will certainly read more books by this author!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book!!

Abused women going missing at a statistically higher rate the normal. Whats going on? When these statistics are brought to the attention of the police, they are essentially ignored. What to do? This is my first experience with this author, and I found her writing excellent and the story compelling. I will watch out for more from her.
