On Episode 1740 of the LLVLC Show, Jimmy takes a look at the failures of the Eat Less, Move More movement. “You guys know that heart disease, type-2 diabetes, etc. are all in the same spectrum of the disease of insulin resistance.” Jimmy Moore In this episode, Jimmy presents a NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN episode of his show JIMMY MAKES SCIENCE SIMPLE (http://www.instagram.com/jimmymakessciencesimple) to share with you about a new study you need to know about. It’s a study published in the January 2021 issue of the Obesity Journal entitled “Does Lifestyle Intervention Improve Health of Adults with Overweight/Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes: Findings from the Look AHEAD Randomized Trial” (Link: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/oby.23158). The Look AHEAD Trial was originally attempting to see the efficacy of the “eat less, move more” concept on cardiovascular risk markers in those who are overweight or obese with Type 2 diabetes. They had a goal for the participants in the intervention wing of the study to lose 7% of their body weight through calorie restriction and incorporate 175 min/week of moderate exercise. But then something happened that made them shift gears in the midst of the study and it’s worthy of note–THERE WAS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE INTERVENTION AND CONTROL GROUPS IN MOST HEALTH OUTCOMES! This is HUGE! The most important health markers tracked, including cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, cognitive function, cognitive impairment, and cancer showed NO STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE with the control group. Despite this being the largest and most intense study on low-calorie diets with increased cardio exercise, it gave no cardiovascular benefit, it reduced lean muscle mass, and it actually led to more fragility fractures. Don’t miss the details on this brand new study that blows the lid off the fallacy of eat less, move more.
