Did you know, that just under 33% of earth’s surface is land? 71% of that land is habitable. Of that, we already use 50% for agriculture and over 75% of that portion is used for livestock production. Yet that land only produces 33% off our global protein supply. Does your brain hurt? The scale & intensity of animal production today is threatening our planetary boundaries of land use, fresh water use & non-renewable phosphate rock..which is still an underestimated aspect of the fertilizer problem.
According to the FAO, if food wastage were a country, it would be the third largest CO2 emitting country in the world after China and the USA.
While researching about companies that are addressing this problem, AgriProtein a South African company grabbed my attention. They have created an innovative animal feed facility with the help of black soldier flies and wet waste.
Their solution is inspired from what livestock naturally ate- Maggots (yeah i know it ain’t a sexy topic) however if you observe ..livestock seek out so many insects to feed on from the soil.
They are literally using millions of maggots to slow down climate change. Wet waste creates methane, which contributes to global warming when released in excess.
However AgriProtein’s solution is keeping millions of tonnes of wet waste out of the landfill..do you want to know how? Tune on to the episode to learn more..
