Last week seventeen people were killed and more than 15 injured in a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on 14 February 2018. Every time gunfire breaks out on school grounds, it can shatter a child’s sense that they are safe in their school and in their community. It appears that perpetrators of shootings are purposefully targeting large gatherings of people with the purpose of killing as many as possible. This could happen anywhere, including substance abuse treatment facilities. Listen in to this opiate recovery support group as they talk about the possibility of being targeted.

Discussion Guide:

Do you feel safe in your treatment facility or support groups?

If not, what precautions can the clinic take to ensure safety?

Can you imagine a substance abuser committing a violent act against the staff and patients at a clinic?

What factors would make a substance abuser act this way?

What protections do you recommend are put in place to keep guns out of the hands of an unstable substance abuser?

Is an opioid dependent person more or less likely to be violent than other substances including alcohol?
