Shortly after the launch of the Apple Watch by the Apple Company, imitation products are on sale in south China's Shenzhen City, a hub for copycat manufacturing.

In a shopping mall, smart watches named "U Watch" or "D Watch" boasting similar looks and functions to Apple Watches are on sale. The watches are being sold at around 200 yuan, or roughly 33 US dollars, each. That’s less than one tenth of the price of the cheapest Apple Watch.

There is no Apple logo appearing on the products. The Chinese version resembles the American one in appearance, but most have crude workmanship.

They can receive calls, send and receive messages and have a music player. However, features such as popular messaging apps WeChat and QQ are absent.

The mall has been a gray market notorious for selling copycat electronics. But in recent years, it has been declining as a "Shanzhai", or copycat hotbed, thanks to the local government’s education on intellectual property rights protection.

copycat n. 模仿者 跟imitator有明显区别。copycat含贬义，带有抄袭的色彩，相当于中文里的“山寨”，imitator则为中性。copycat也可作形容词，表示“模仿的，山寨的”。
