Hey there, I'm Julia Cartwright, and I'm so glad you've carved out this moment for yourself today. You know, it's mid-November, and if you're like most people, the holiday season is creeping up like an uninvited guest, bringing all its food-laden parties and pressure-cooker family dinners. Today, we're going to practice something I call "eating with intention," because I promise you, it changes everything.
Let's start by finding a comfortable seat, shoulders soft, spine tall but not rigid. Take a breath in through your nose for four counts, and exhale through your mouth like you're gently fogging a mirror. Do that again. Notice how your body settles with each exhale. You're already here. You're already doing the work.
Now, I want you to think about your next meal or snack, whichever comes first today. Before you eat it, I want you to pause and engage all five senses, one by one. Start with sight. Really look at the food. Notice the colors, the textures, how light plays across it. This isn't about judgment; it's about presence. Then, bring it close and notice the aroma. What memories or feelings does it stir up? That's your body giving you information.
Next, touch it if you can. Feel the temperature, the texture against your fingers. Then, as you bring it to your mouth, notice the initial taste before you chew. Let it sit there for a moment. When you do chew, really chew. Notice how flavors deepen and change. Most of us eat like we're being chased, but when you slow down, you taste more and need less. That's not restriction; that's abundance.
The magic here is this: when you eat consciously, you're not fighting your body. You're listening to it. You're asking, what do I actually want? What does this food offer me? Nourishment, comfort, joy? All valid. No shame in the game.
As you move through your day, pick just one eating moment to practice this. One. That's it. Not every meal needs to be a meditation. Just one conscious bite, one mindful moment, and you've shifted your entire relationship with food.
