Listen Later

Miroslaw Chojecki, a key figure in Polands Solidarity movement, passed away at 76. Known as the unofficial publisher of the Polish resistance, Chojecki played a pivotal role in dismantling one-party rule. His most famous act of defiance involved smuggling 50 fax machines into Poland in 1989, which helped Solidarity win the first free elections. A chemist by training, Chojecki founded the Independent Publishing House, NOWa, and was arrested 44 times for his activism. After the fall of communism, he co-founded an independent television company, produced documentaries, and started a Jewish film festival. He received Polands highest civilian honor in 2022.
