Luke 10:41-42
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”About SerittaSeritta Nelson is blessed with not one, but two! She and her husband have twin girls, Jordynn and Joyann. My daughters recently had an ant farm filled with worker ants. True to their name, they worked hard to create their own passageways to travel and store food. The ants even buried their dead. What was missing from our farm was the queen ant and the sacrificing male ant that dies shortly after mating.
"If [a] colony is not producing anymore ants, you're just in survival mode." A functioning ant colony in nature usually has a queen ant that lives many years, one male, and many worker ants. They all work together to grow a next generation of ants and preserve their colony. If the colony is not producing anymore ants, you're just in survival mode.
I'm reminded of the story of Mary and Martha. When Jesus went to visit them, Mary sat at His feet giving Him her full attention, listening to Him speak of the Word. So, she was gaining knowledge of God, information on how to bring God's children to Himself, and preserve the next generation of disciples - people who follow Jesus, and preserve the Word in their lives. Martha instead was very busy serving and eventually complained to Jesus that she was not getting any help from Mary. In Luke chapter 10 verse 41 to 42, Jesus told her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Mary did not want to be separate from God's Word, because it was the foundation of what would become the church of God. No job was that important, because it really was about building a legacy for the next generation. But, like my children's worker ants without a queen, Martha worked really hard and missed the intended purpose. She did not have the same desire to build the next generation of believers the way Mary did, so she was easily distracted doing busy work. The result of my kids ant farm was that they died in a few short weeks, leaving behind amazing looking tunnels, showing their hard work - but with no new young ants to live in it.
"Let our children see that God is our need, and that it's incredibly satisfying to know the Lord." The one thing we need is God. The one thing we need is Jesus - God who came in human form, to show us that it is possible to live selflessly for God while we're here on earth, and produce real functioning loyal people who would love Him and do the same. With our children, we have to navigate the world around us, knowing which direction we're going in and essentially why. The purpose is that we want to know God and we want our children to know God, so that we can be complete in Him. We should be giving back to Him children filled with hope and faith. Let our children see that God is our need, and that it's incredibly satisfying to know the Lord. They must be aware that life is only complete when we know God.
"Help us to see our children as You see them - a chosen generation, meant to carry the Word of God in their hearts." Lord thank You for being what we need. Thank You for seeing ahead of us - You know all things. Thank You for Your wisdom and Your strength. Please help us to know You more and more. Settle in us that You are the one thing we need. Help us to be willing to hear from You.
