I had the honor of sitting down with the elusive Mr. Hormusji N. Cama, Chairman and key custodian of a massive responsibility, Mumbai Samachar - a true heritage brand. Its journey began on 1st July 1822, as Bombay Samachar, and was printed to alert the tradesmen about the arrival and departure of ships at the Bombay docks. Over 200+ years and counting, the newspaper is printed in Gujarati and remains Asia's oldest continuously published newspaper.Mr. Hormusji N. Cama has served as the Chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) for the year 2018–2019. He gave back to society & the news landscape by previously serving two terms as the President of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) and held leadership roles as the Chairman of the Press Trust of India (PTI) and the Media Research Users Council (MRUC).An active board member of INS, PTI, and MRUC, his family has been the custodian of Mumbai Samachar since the 1930s. Witnessing the complex history of India, the Mumbai Samachar still sells for Rs 10 and is thinking about revising the prices as he believes good, verified, trusted content is king.He mentioned one thing that impacted me deeply, specially in this age of “quick news." He said he preferred holding back the news, to fact-check rather than release it. That is the kind of responsibility that is so badly required in today’s news journalism.
