American Cattlemen Podcast

Musgrave Angus

Listen Later

Welcome to another episode of the American Cattlemen Podcast and our Producer Profile. Just ahead, we have Gale McKinney, the Publisher of American Cattlemen, and Tyler Musgrave with Musgrave Angus out of Griggsville, IL. The podcast highlights the rich history and ongoing success of Musgrave Angus, a family-operated seed stock business located in Griggsville, Illinois.

Founded in the early 1960s by Melvin Musgrave as a 4-H project, the ranch has evolved into a multi-generational operation now managed by Tyler Musgrave and his brother, with their parents still actively involved in daily cattle care. The upcoming 30th annual "Pick Em and Pike" spring sale represents a milestone for the operation. The sale will feature 121 herd sire prospects, 33 replacement heifers, and 38 spring cow-calf pairs. Tyler emphasizes the consistency and quality of their cattle, particularly highlighting their focus on foot quality, structure, and phenotype. Key sire groups include the Musgrave Milestones, known for exceptional foot quality and structure, and the Rob Roy bulls, characterized by their robust build and heat tolerance. The sale will showcase bulls from various bloodlines, including sons of the highly successful 6 Feet bull, which averaged $25,000 across 47 sons last year. Musgrave Angus prides itself on producing practical, performance-driven cattle that work well in challenging environments. Tyler stresses the importance of cattle that not only look good on paper but can perform in real-world conditions. The operation maintains a "handshake guarantee," standing behind their genetics and offering support to customers. The sale represents more than just a commercial transaction; it's a celebration of decades of careful breeding and commitment to the beef industry. Tyler describes the current moment as the "golden age of the beef industry" and remains passionate about producing high-quality cattle that meet the needs of both commercial and purebred producers. With a focus on consistency, performance, and family tradition, Musgrave Angus continues to be a significant contributor to the Angus breed and the broader cattle industry.
