Marcus Aurelie said, “What is divine deserves our respect because it is good. What is human deserves our affection because it is like us. And our pity too, sometimes its inability to tell good from bad - as terrible a blindness as the kind that can’t tell white from black.”

There are a lot of life guru’s out there. I have read some of thier books and proudly nodded and cried along to some of thier soul-awakening speaches. Recently i had the pleasure of receiving an e mail from a self proclaimed energy healer who wanted to be a quest on my podcast. After i agreed to do an episode with her, she wrote back to tell me she listened to bit of my episode and had realized that i looked at things from a biblical perspective. The biblical perspective, she said made her unsure if she would be a good fit for my podcast because she was not “religious at all … or a fan of religion.”

Had this been the thought of any regular person who was simply put off by the insitution of religion, i would have had no bone to pick with such a person. However, such a statement coming from a life guru, a self porclaimed spiritual healer, a ‘new ager’, and an energy ‘FIXER’ spewed out so much ignorance that i couldnt gather enough paper towels in the world to wipe off.

Yes it bothered me that much and here is why.

What a lot of so called life gurus do not realise is that, the very founding fathers and mothers of the new age movement did look at things from a biblical perspective. Yogananda, the man who literally brough yoga, mediation and mindfulness to america, was a fan of Jesus. He saw Jesus as a great teacher and philosopher the same way he saw Buddha. HE READ THE BIBLE! There is a difference between looking at things from a biblical perspective and looking at things from the catholic churches perspective. The two are not the same. The main character of the bibe did not start a religion (nor did He tell anyone to start one). To look at things from a biblical perspective does not make a person religious. Neither does a person need to be religious in order to look at things from a biblical perspective.

The biblical perspective is a philosphy adopted by some of the powerful minds that ever lived.

I am a self porclaimed nerd who has read tones of ‘new age’ spiritual books, self improvement books and pretty much knows about almost every ‘live your best life now’ podcast out there. I am yet to find a single well read and highly educated spiritual teacher or philosopher who does not acknolege the teaching of the bible or whose teachings completely deviates from what is in the bible. It is almost always the same things said differently.

So to the life gurus out there, are going to uphold the teachings of Yogananda or a person whose works were influenced by Yogananda, but then question me for looking at things from a bibical perspective? Are you going to question Oprah Winfrey, the woman who has given voices to so many ‘new age’ authors, for labeling the bible her favorite book? There is the issue of personal preference which i do not dispute. However, if you are going to claim to be a spiritual teacher or healer of anything, then do your homework because the very authority you stand on to do your teachings were influeced by the BIBLE!
