Neem - A Common Yet Extraordinary Herbal Medicine

Many plants are used for medicinal purposes and neem is one of them. In Ayurvedic texts, neem (Azadirachta indica) is described as ‘Sarva Roga Nivarini’ which translates to Universal Healer or curer of all Ailments. This herbal medicine represents good health and protection and is considered sacred by many people in India. Neem possesses powerful health properties and has been used as a source of healing as long as 4,500 years ago.

The neem tree is a member of the mahogany family. It uses emerged in ancient India and neighboring countries. Even today, neem is regarded as the “Village Pharmacy” because every part of it is known to possess special healing qualities. According to Ayurveda, neem is mainly consumed to stabilize Pitta and Kapha.

Effect on Doshas

The holy neem is favored with a bitter taste (Tikta), constricting taste (Kashaya Rasa) and light (Laghu), and dry quality (Rukshna Guna). It structurally exhibits cold potency (Shita Virya) and strong metabolic flavor (Katu Vipaka). Neem extracts calm down fire and air (Pitta), and earth and water (Kapha) but excess intake of it may increase air (Vata). Ayurvedic scriptures actively mention the use of neem in several conditions like Kustha (skin disorders), Pachana (digestive issues), Kesha (hair problems), Deepana (enhances stomach fire), Anulomana (improved breathing), Prameha (diabetes management), Chardi (relieves vomiting and nausea), Rochana (appetite stimulant), and Vranahara (treating wounds).
