NFPA 13 - Small Room Rule

Listen Later

Summary of the Small Room Rule

The Small Room Rule, as defined in Section 3.3.22 of the NFPA 13 – Sprinkler Systems (2016 edition), applies to compartments meeting the following criteria:

  • Light hazard occupancy classification.
  • Unobstructed construction.
  • Floor area not exceeding 800 ft2 (74 m2).
  • When these conditions are met, certain sprinkler system installation requirements are modified:

    • Section 8.6.2.1.2 states that the standard requirements for determining the protection area of coverage for each sprinkler do not apply in a small room. Instead, the protection area for each sprinkler is calculated by dividing the total area of the room by the number of sprinklers installed in the room.
    • Section 8.6.3.2.4 similarly exempts small rooms from the typical distance requirements between sprinklers and walls.
    • The Small Room Rule allows for simplified sprinkler layout and calculations in spaces where the fire hazard is considered low and the room size is relatively small. This simplification recognizes that the limited space and occupancy type reduce the risk of a rapidly spreading fire, allowing for a less stringent sprinkler system design.

These modifications offer flexibility in sprinkler placement within small rooms without compromising fire protection effectiveness.
