John is showing us the greatness of Christ through an astonishing miracle. He does this by showing us the kinds of things that keep people from honoring Christ.
What can keep us from seeing Jesus is the pride of attachment to someone special, a sense of entitlement, and an over-familiarity with Jesus. The miracle tells us that Jesus is gracious, that Jesus is powerful.
