Paul Morrow: Warning over state of NZ's Forensic Pathology Service

Listen Later

One medical expert's adamant applying a business model to a medical service doesn't work.
Senior doctors claim the national Forensic Pathology Service is on the brink of collapse, and if it falls over, homicide cases could be missed.
They say the Ministry of Justice is proposing to dismantle the service, and fragment it over four different providers.
Regional forensic pathologist Dr Paul Morrow told Mike Hosking the Ministry of Justice has a market-based approach but that's not going solve the problem.
"The problem with that thinking is there is really no market for an effective competition, as in the classic business model."
The restructuring will come into effect in October.
