Dr Ames is a professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, and a senior scientist at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute. His research has been fundamental in developing our understanding of how suboptimal micronutrient intakes contribute to accelerated aging and chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune dysfunction, and cognitive decline. Recently he expanded his ‘triage theory’ to introduce two concepts inherent in the triage-rationing mechanism: longevity proteins and longevity vitamins. This indicates there is a new class of vitamins that are essential for healthy ageing, but do not have the immediate deficiency-related disease of traditional vitamins. Dr Ames shares his theory and its implications for nutrition, health and personalized medicine.   Further reading:   Ames BN. Prolonging healthy aging: Longevity vitamins and proteins.
