If you situate yourself in such a way that you can see the universe as a cosmic schoolhouse, "everything is meant for teaching me something and so that I can improve myself" - if I take it like that, then I take whatever happens to me as a way to learn something valuable. We may not see it at first, but if we're able to ask the question, we avoid the default question, which is, 'Why me?' And this leads to a sense of victimhood, which takes a long time to come out of—a lot of coaching and help and so forth.

But if we're able to, in the moment, deal with whatever happens to us by asking the question, 'What's this meant to teach me?' it profoundly changes the way we interact with the world. This is self-help 101, isn't it? Say yes, and I'll explain why. Because every person on the planet, in any book, recording, or lecture, will say this next phrase, which is, 'It's not what happens to you; it's what you do about what happens to you,' and the essence of that is, 'What is the lesson?
