The effects of betrayal trauma can come as a surprise to the betraying spouse. Often, betrayal trauma comes with a number of negative emotions in the betrayed spouse. It is also common for spouses to experience the symptoms of PTSD, including intense rage at their spouse.

Their responses are normal given the fact that they have experienced trauma. Trauma puts them into fight or flight mode and causes them to get angry in an attempt to protect themselves from further harm.

Understanding the symptoms of betrayal trauma is important to be able to respond to your spouse with compassion and care. It can be hard to respond to their anger with empathy and understanding, but doing so can really help your spouse feel safe, and can help calm their anger. Being understanding and supportive of your spouse is key to helping calm the rage response of betrayal trauma.
