When we’re in trouble, we have a tendency to start bargaining with God, thinking he might be willing to change our short-term situation if we make him a long-term promise. But God doesn’t need anything from us, and there’s nothing we can do to change the standards of where we stand with him. Because it isn’t our behavior that makes us acceptable–it’s his grace.
