The Revolutionized Mind

S2, E27: Healing in the Aftermath of Tragedy (with Tyler Smith)

Listen Later

This week on The Revolutionized Mind, I’m joined by mental health advocate, speaker, and survivor of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash, Tyler Smith. In this episode, Tyler opens up about his journey through tragedy, recovery, and the ongoing process of healing. We begin by talking about his hockey background and how his experiences in sport helped shape his understanding of teamwork and purpose. Tyler mentions that he doesn’t remember anything from the day of this life-changing accident, but he shares the physical, emotional, and mental impacts of surviving such profound loss. We talk about navigating survivor’s guilt, what it meant to return to the team before realizing he needed to step away, and how he began to face these unimaginably difficult thoughts and emotions. Through his deeply honest reflections, Tyler takes us inside his healing journey. He talks about going to therapy, finding meaning in vulnerability, and pouring into his relationships (both with himself and with others). Tyler highlights the power of community and how true connection can change the course of recovery. We also discuss everything he is doing now, from founding Not Alone Co. to getting married to winning the Amazing Race Canada. This episode is a powerful reminder of resilience and the beauty of growth. Tyler’s story shows that healing is possible and that sharing our pain can be one of the most profound ways to help others heal too.
