Welcome back, friend. I'm Julia, and I'm so glad you're here. It's late November, that strange in-between time when the holidays are creeping closer and your schedule feels like it's already packed three deep. I'm guessing your meals might be getting squeezed between meetings, or maybe you're stress eating your way through the afternoon, barely tasting a thing. Am I close? Well, today we're going to slow down together and practice something that costs nothing but changes everything: mindful eating.
Let's start by just arriving here. Wherever you are right now—whether that's your kitchen, your desk, or even your car during a lunch break—I want you to take three deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, hold it for four, and release for four. Again. And one more time. Feel that? That's you, stepping off the treadmill for a moment.
Now, here's what we're going to do. I want you to think about something you're about to eat or drink today. It could be your next cup of coffee, a snack, lunch, whatever. Got it? Here's the beautiful part: before you consume it, we're going to actually meet it first.
Pick up that food or drink. Look at it like you've never seen it before. Notice the colors. If it's an apple, maybe it's a blend of deep red and green. If it's coffee, watch how the steam rises like tiny clouds. What textures do you notice? Is it smooth or bumpy or rough? Now bring it closer and smell it. Really smell it. Our sense of smell is deeply connected to enjoyment, but we skip right over it. Don't skip. Pause here for a moment.
Now, place it in your mouth but don't chew yet. Let it sit there. Feel the temperature. Notice any flavors that emerge just from contact. This is where the magic happens—you're already more present than you were thirty seconds ago.
When you do take that first bite or sip, do it slowly. Chew deliberately. Notice how flavors change and develop. You might taste things you've never noticed before. This isn't about perfection or doing it right. It's about actually being there for the experience of nourishing yourself.
The practice today is simple: choose one eating moment—just one—to do this with. One meal, one snack, one drink. That's it. Not every bite of the day, just one deliberate, conscious experience.
