Really good and very different
Seeing as I'm the first to review let me give a brief summary: The book is essentially divided into 2 stories that are later linked by various family ties and properties. The earlier story is about a young h who tragically lost all her family and went a little wild. The H publicly humiliates her by saying something derogatory about her. They haven't seen each other for 3 years and finally meet up again at a mutual friends house. I loved this story and I loved the sparks between the H and h. The h was really hurt by the H but he redeems himself marvellously.
The second story is about a young widow who is living quietly in the country on her brothers property. The brother loses the property to the H and the H comes to claim the property from the h. The background to this story is that the h's mother had tried to arrange a marriage between the H and h years ago but the h left town as she wasn't ready to get married again.
What I loved about both stories is the devotion of the H's to the h's. This is exactly my idea of romance. I really recommend this book.
Double romance, part Restoration and part late Georgian
"Scandalous Innocent" by Juliet Landon is a two-part historical romance, with the two halves set 127 years apart. The heroines of the two stories are linked by the same Christian name, and Phoebe Donville, the heroine of the second half of the book, is a direct descendant of Phoebe Laker, heroine of the first half. When shown a painting of her ancestor, Phoebe Donville thinks the resemblance in their features is "uncanny" and that it felt like "looking back at herself in period dress."
Much of both halves of the novel are set in the real historical huilding and gardens of Ham House at Richmond upon Thames (in the area which is now considered part of Greater London.) Ham House is currently a National Trust property, and the historical noble families who owned the house in 1676 and 1803 respectively are important supporting characters in the story.
As the novel begins in 1676, the Duchess of Lauderdale has invited her friend, Phoebe Laker, to stay with her at Ham House, in spite of the fact that this may bring Phoebe into contact with her husband's secretary, Sir Leo Hawkynne. Phoebe and Leo have been on very bad terms since he thoughtlessly made a cruel remark about her three years before which was repeated back to her by unkind gossips. the Duchess may have been hoping to repair the breach or perhaps to do a little matchmaking but it is soon clear that Leo and Pheobe will continue to set sparks off one another ...
The second half of the story begins in 1803 when Phoebe's namesake and descendant, a young widow called Phoebe Donville, receives an unwelcome visitor, Viscount Ransome.
