The most common response has always been that because the athlete had changed the way he pressed the judges weren't sure if this was a legal lift or not via the backbend when locking the bar out Overhead! Other versions of why the Overhead Press was removed was the politics between the different countries!

Some people will argue that the clean and jerk is the lift and there's no denying that but there's something to be said when you power clean a huge weight and smash it overhead for three white lights! Now on to the gym world where you rarely see anyone pressing a barbell or heavy dumbbells anymore. Most gyms nowadays frown on anyone who wants to do these tried and true strength movements. A few of the reasons for this is that really most gyms are not equipped to do these movements and secondly, the majority of clientele gets scared when they see this type of aggressive training!

Eric and Scott feel that the true test of strength and we know that most people will argue its a Squat or Deadlift but we both feel that cleaning a heavy barbell or a dumbbell or dumbbells is the true test of Strength and Power! If you've never done a clean and press just clean a 44 pound Olympic Bar and lock it out overhead! I guarantee you you'll be moving all over because you haven't built the stabilizer muscles needed to hold the bar overhead. Just envision 200 pounds locked out and held at arm's length. This movement works you from head to toe!
