In Episode 18 of The Staffroom Podcast with Chey and Pav, the duo talks about Wellness in the classroom program, as well as a school-wide initiative. They start the episode by talking about the importance of paying attention to student wellness, and how impactful it can be to take care of wellness in the classroom. Chey and Pav then spend some time talking about the different ways they help take care of wellness in the classroom. It can be through Meditation, free-writing or journaling, or even puzzles and games, like crosswords, word searches and sudoku math puzzles. They talk about the different ways that students can benefit from rolling starts in the morning, and not the hard-set beginnings to the day, where students need to be in their seats, ready to learn right at the first morning bell. Having a slower start to the day can be beneficial to students, especially when they are coming in to school from stressful home situations.
Chey and Pav talk about some other ways they are able to embed wellness into their daily programming, and also some of the benefits these programs have on their lives. They talk about how much the classroom culture can change when students are given outlets to help them deal with internal and external struggles they may be facing.
For their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav welcome Michael Ancona, from Marlboro, New Jersey, teacher and host of The Monarch Experience Podcast - a unique, student-driven podcast. Michael discusses his experience with starting this podcast with his students and how rewarding the whole project has been for him.
Chey and Pav wrap up their episode by talking about the different ways in which their school has incorporated Wellness into its School Improvement Plan, and how it has become a norm that teachers have become comfortable with practicing.
Chey and Pav always finish their episode with a few of their favourite phrases and mottos, including "Inspire, Don't Require," "Always be a Humble Servant," and "Education Never Dies."
