On September 17, 1971, Sarah and Dick wrote to each other from opposite sides of the world. Both were still aching from their goodbye in Hawaii. Dick, back in Vietnam, wrote about going on alert, balancing his checkbook, and hearing more rumors of bases closing. Sarah, back in San Antonio, wrote about her dreams of him, her exhaustion, and her fierce devotion. More than anything, both of them wished they were back together.
